Hey there
Once upon a time my mother taught me manners but somewhere between a Yorkshire childhood and a compulsive viewing of American dramas, they fell by the way. And so we start with hey there. There might be good morning and good afternoon when I answer the phone but it's hey there in spirit. I don't mean to be rude and what I'm actually saying is 'Hello and hey, how are you doing over there, I hope everything is gravy.*
I'm an academic. I'm not an academic because I've done research or because that's my day job; I'm an academic because of the way I approach the world. In that respect, the words I write and pictures I take reflect that I'm forever testing hypothesis and analysing the world around me. So while my official studies ended with my PhD, I know I'll be a student forever.
I've an opinion of most things and each week I write roughly 1,000 words in my Thursday Column. It's a bit political and a bit personal; it started as a way of figuring out what I was going to do with my life and somehow grew to being a focal point of each week. Forget calendars running Monday to Sunday or Sunday to Saturday. Mine runs Friday to Thursday which says rather a lot about me. No claim to be a beautiful or unique snowflake, just that I'm determined to live life in whichever way works for me.
Thanks for dropping by!
