Marketing & Communication

Picture
I remember reading in The Fabulous Girl's Guide to Decorum (I like self help books that advocate the necessity of heels that you can walk in) that there may be times when you wonder how your various projects could develop into a career but that by having a little faith in yourself, you'll find your way.

After my BA in politics, I worked briefly as a copywriter for a marketing company where I wrote a report on advertising, PR and marketing. I had a stint in sales before returning to academia where I particularly loved conducting interviews, testing new ideas and presenting my findings. I got hooked on social media and started reading about how it was affecting society. I had always fancied working in a museum and applied for an internship in Education and Events. I didn't get it but was instead offered an internship in marketing. A few months later I began my current role as the marketing manager of the Dean Heritage Centre.

Politics is not immediately obvious as a vocational subject but really it is just the study of people. Academia may seem an odd route into marketing until you consider that research is just project management.
